Protective coating for molten metal tools

Date: July 8, 2010

After many years invested in Research & Development, our tests have shown that with different types of coating, we are able to outlast the service life of molten metal tools up to 20 times compared to conventional tools (Carbon Steel).

First of all, there are 2 families of coatings:

- High temperature barrier
- Abrasion-fighting

Both are applied on products, depending on the environment in which they will be used. All our coatings have been developed by the R&D Metal 7’s team, first tested in our laboratory and then, upon meeting our satisfaction, in the field with our strategic partners. All our products and coatings have been developed taking into consideration the needs of our clients. Every project is carried out with end user’s best interest in mind.

1 - Skimming Spoon

The first project made for an aluminum smelter was the skimmer spoon for liquid cast iron. In general, a carbon steel spoon can stand 2 to 7 immersions in liquid cast iron. The spoon is then corroded from 50% to 85% in some cases, due to the impurities in the liquid cast iron, and results in a lower quality product.

With a coating, the same skimmer spoon may stand up to 100 immersions without any corrosion. The spoon is also easier to handle, because there is no metal build-up on the shaft and the spoon.

2 - Skimming Rake/ Blade

With the success of the spoons, we have begun exploring other venues. So we developed a second type of high temperature coating, this time for liquid aluminum. Like the spoon, the number of immersions was very low and the degradation very high.

With our coating, which has the same thermal expansion coefficient as base material, users can considerably increase the number of immersions in liquid aluminum. The cleaning and handling are also much easier.

3 - Thermocouple Sheath & Protective Tube

Thermocouple could only stand 1 immersion before becoming useless. With our coating, it is able to stand more than 10 immersions. It is a big gain for productivity and Health & Safety.

We are continuously involved in many projects to pursue the development of new coatings and the improvement of our productivity for our clients. We invite you to consult our brochure in the "Publications" section to learn more about our coatings and products for the aluminum industry.
