Slurry Pump Casings

Client: Wabush Mines
Date: June 30, 1988

Slurry pump casings used in the iron ore application are subjected to gradual wear by the infiltration of solids between the casings and linings.

Metal 7 has developped for the iron ore and paper industries ceramic and metallic coatings to improve the casing life by five times.

On A.S.H. pumps used at the concentrator at Wabush Mines, Wabush, Newfoundland, Canada, a ceramic coating is used. This ceramic coating has a hardness of seventy (70) Rockwell C with a smooth surface finish. The pump casings are cast iron fabricated.

The coating advantages are as follows:

  • Life cycle is five times more than steel or stainless steel casings;

  • Pump maintenance is greatly reduced;

  • The polished surface eliminates lining damage during casing dismantling;

  • The cast casings are easily split apart for maintenance.

Wabush Mines application is one of many examples that Metal 7 provides this coating in both the mining and pulp & paper industries.

Similar coatings are also used on agitator shafts in discs filter systems in iron ore process plants.
