Shaft and Turbine Bearing Support
Dielectric coating on shaft and bearing supports
Client: Hydro-Québec
Date: November 30, 1995
Hydro-Quebec has six (6) electricity producing turbines at Manic 5 central station. These turbines wear prematurily inside their bearing supports. After studying this problem, results have detected a bad ground was causing damage between the shaft and the bearing supports creating electrical corrosion, which considerable wear of the bearing supports created difficulties in its operation.
In conjunction with Hydro-Quebec, Metal 7 has proposed the application of a dielectric ceramic coating on the shaft. This solution has resolved not only the electrical corrosion problem, but also a drop of 2°C and has assured reduction in the friction coefficient of the ceramic coating.
